Teen dies following South Deering shooting

A teen died after he was shot Sunday in the South Deering neighborhood.

The shooting occurred at 2:50 p.m., directly south of a condominium complex playground in 10500 block of South Oglesby Avenue, authorities said.

The boy, 16, was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back, where he died at 3:39 p.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

His name was not immediately released pending notification of relatives.

Takara Jackson, a three-year resident of the condo complex where the shooting occurred, said she was fearful for younger residents’ safety.

“These kids can’t even come out and play in the park. It’s ridiculous,” Jackson said. “Kids can’t play. They can’t do anything.”

Area South detectives are investigating.
