A South Side man was denied bond Sunday after prosecutors claim he fatally shot a 42-year-old man during an attempted robbery in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

Police on patrol near the 7900 block of South Justine Street saw Thomas Bishop and another man approach two men in an alley about 11:55 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.

Bishop and his acquaintance announced a robbery then shot both men, authorities said. When the nearby officers approached, the two robbers ran away, police said.

The officers gave chase and at least one of the officers shot one of the suspected robbers after he allegedly turned and pointed a dark object at the officers, police said.

One of the robbery victims, 42-year-old Tepete Davis, was shot multiple times during the robbery and died at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 1:08 a.m. Friday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The other robbery victim was shot in the leg and was taken to Christ Medical Center in good condition, authorities said.

Bishop, 41, of the 8200 block of South Wolcott Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder and ordered held without bond during a Sunday hearing. It was not immediately known if he was the suspect shot by police.

No officers were injured during the pursuit, authorities said.

Area South detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating the shooting.
