Joseph Lewis killed in South Shore shooting

A 39-year-old man died early Thursday when friends dropped off at a South Side hospital after he was shot multiple times.

Joseph Lewis was outside in the 7900 block of South Essex Avenue when somebody opened fire about 2:40 a.m. Thursday, authorities said.

Lewis, of the 7600 block of South Essex Avenue, was struck by several bullets and friends drove him to South Shore Hospital, where he died less than an hour later, authorities said.

Nobody has been charged for the murder.

Area South detectives are investigating if the shooting was gang related.
