16-year-old Abayomi Okanlawan killed, second teen wounded in South Chicago shooting

Abayomi Okanlawan was standing outside his South Chicago neighborhood home with another teenage boy on Monday evening when gunshots rang out, leaving the 16-year-old dead and the other teen wounded.

Okanlawan and a 17-year-old boy were standing outside in the 7900 block of South Merrill about 5:30 p.m. when a red vehicle pulled up. A male suspect got out and fired shots at them, police said. The gunman then got back into the vehicle, which sped off.

Okanlawan was shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:05 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived on the same block where the shooting happened.

An autopsy showed he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The other teen was shot in the back and was taken to South Shore Hospital in serious condition, police said.
