Joseph Gaithers dies hours after being shot in head in Chatham

Joseph Gaithers died about four hours after being shot in the head Wednesday afternoon in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.

About 1:15 p.m., Gaithers, 35, was talking with someone in the 8000 block of South King Drive, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The other person pulled a gun and shot Gaithers in the head.

Gaithers, of the 6300 block of South Calumet, was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 5:31 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
