Northwest Indiana resident Jovan Dovantae Hopkins was shot to death in the Back of the Yards neighborhood Thursday night on the South Side.
About 8:45 p.m., the 22-year-old was walking in the 5200 block of South Emerald when someone walked out of a nearby gangway and opened fire, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The shooter then jumped in a vehicle, which sped away, police said.
Hopkins was shot in the upper body and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 9:33 p.m., authorities said.
He lived in the 4900 block of Walsh Avenue in East Chicago, Ind.
Police are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.
