WEEK IN REVIEW: At least 22 homicide victims in Chicago last week and number could rise

At least 22 people were homicide victims last week in Chicago, including 9 on Wednesday, the single highest homicide total in one day in over 10 years.

And that number does not include an 11-year-old boy who died of a gunshot wound that police have called accidental; nor the remains of a young child found in lagoon in Garfield Park.

Reba M. Wagner was killed in a shooting that left another man injured Sunday morning in Englewood. Officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 7200 block of South Green at 7:45 a.m. and found two people shot, police said.

Wagner, 20, was shot multiple times, at least once in the abdomen, and pronounced dead at the scene at 8:20 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. A 34-year-old man was shot in the leg and taken in good condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Former Mt. Carmel football star Lavell Southern was killed and another man was injured in a drive-by shooting early Sunday on the Near West Side.

The men were standing outside about 2:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of West Randolph when a van pulled up and someone inside opened fire, according to police.

Southern, 23, was shot multiple times in the back and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:02 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 8800 block of South Bennett.

The other man, 24, suffered a gunshot wound to the upper left arm and was also taken to Stroger, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Shaquandra Ratliff was shot to death early Sunday in Woodlawn. The 20-year-old was shot in the head about 1:30 a.m. during an outdoor party in an alley in the 6100 block of South Cottage Grove, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Ratliff, who lived in the 6800 block of South Morgan, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she died at 2:29 a.m.

Former Lane Tech basketball player Jamaal Barney was shot to death in North Lawndale late Friday.

About 11:40 p.m., the 22-year-old was standing on the sidewalk in the 1800 block of South Drake when a gold SUV drove past and someone inside opened fire, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

He was shot in the chest, abdomen and legs, police said. Barney, of the 1600 block of South Central Park, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died at 12:19 a.m. Saturday.

Leonard J. Williams-Tate died after a drive-by shooting that left two others wounded late Friday in Austin.

The three men were standing on the sidewalk in the 1600 block of North Mayfield about 11:20 p.m. when someone in a passing vehicle shot them, police said.

Williams-Tate, 31, was shot in his right side and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died at 4:10 a.m. Saturday, according to the medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 5100 block of West Wabansia.

The two others, 33 and 28, were each shot in the right leg. One was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and the other to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, police said. Their conditions had stabilized.

A downstate man was shot to death Friday night in North Lawndale. Emmett Marsh, 35, of Peoria was sitting in a parked vehicle on the 1100 block of South Richmond at 8:20 p.m. when someone walked up to the car and shot him in the torso, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

A friend drove Marsh to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died 10:35 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

Police are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.

A northwest Indiana man has been charged with reckless homicide after a rollover crash Thursday night on Lake Shore Drive in Edgewater left a woman dead.

Christopher Peacock, 33, faces the charge for the single-vehicle crash that happened about 7:20 p.m. in the 5700 block of North Lake Shore Drive, according to police. Peacock was at the wheel of the vehicle, which was speeding when it hit a pole and rolled over, police said.

His passenger, 33-year-old Jillian Tsirtsis of Crown Point, Ind., was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Peacock was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious-to-critical condition, authorities said. Police said at the time of the crash that alcohol may have played a role.

One man was killed and another wounded in an exchange of gunfire Thursday morning in Bronzeville.

The two men started shooting at each other during an argument about 5:10 a.m. in the 4700 block of South King Drive, according to police.

John Stewart, 39, was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He was killed on the block where he lived.

The other man, 52, was shot in the knee and shin, and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition, police said.

Police On Tuesday called the shooting self-defense and said no charges would be filed against the shooter.

A 28-year-old woman was fatally shot early Thursday in Morgan Park. Claudia Mister was outside about 2:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of West 115th Place when someone walked up and shot her in the torso, police and the medical examiner’s office said.

Mister, who lived in the 10600 block of South Church, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she died at 5:35 a.m.

Wednesday was the deadliest day in Chicago since 2003, with at least nine people killed and 12 others wounded.

Dan Rance was killed late Wednesday in Austin. The 23-year-old Rance was outside about 11:35 p.m. in the 700 block of North Long when someone walked up and opened fire, police and the medical examiner’s office said.

Rance, who lived on the same block, was shot in the chest and torso, and died at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.

About two hours earlier, 19-year-old Jimmy Tripp was killed in Englewood. About 9:45 p.m., he was in the 800 block of West 68th Street when someone walked up and shot him several times before running off, authorities said.

Tripp, who lived in the 7300 block of South Emerald, was dead at the scene, authorities said.

A 60-year-old man was shot to death Wednesday night in South Shore. Ira Washington was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in the hallway of a building in the 6800 block of South Merrill shortly after 9 p.m., according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Washington lived on the same block where he was shot. Police believe the shooting might have been narcotics-related.

Late Wednesday afternoon, a man was killed and two others wounded in a Belmont Cragin shooting. About 5:30 p.m., the three men got into a fight with another person, who pulled a gun and started firing in the 5900 block of West Diversey, according to police.

Daniel Guerra, 19, was shot in the neck and chest and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. Guerra lived in the 2100 block of North McVicker.

A 23-year-old man shot in the back also was taken to Illinois Masonic in critical condition, and a 22-year-old shot in the hand was taken to Community First Medical Center. His condition stabilized, police said.

Wednesday morning, three men were shot—one fatally—in another South Shore attack. Just after 9 a.m., they were standing outside in the 2600 block of East 74th Place when someone walked up and started shooting. Vuan Evans, 25, was taken to South Shore Hospital, where he died at 9:40 a.m., authorities said. Evans lived on the 3100 block of South Cheltenham Place.

A 29-year-old man shot in the back was taken to Stroger Hospital. Police initially said he died but he was listed in critical condition early Thursday. A 50-year-old man was taken to Jackson Park Hospital in good condition.

Two men were shot to death in Uptown early Wednesday in an attack that happened at 2:17 a.m. in the 5000 block of North Winthrop, police said.

Robert Anderson, 34, of the 7900 block of South Ridgeland, was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:55 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

Michael Gibbs, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. His home address was unknown.

Both men suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Two men charged with the fatal shootings of Anderson and Gibbs—28-year-old Michael Laster and 33-year-old Jonathon Thompson—are being held without bond, charged with two counts of murder.

Troy Burtin was shot and killed early Wednesday in East Garfield Park Officers responding to a call of a person shot at 12:20 a.m. in the 2700 West Lexington found the 25-year-old unresponsive on a sidewalk with gunshot wounds to the head, chest and groin, according to Police and the medical examiner’s office.

Burtin, of the 2800 block of West Polk, was pronounced dead at the scene minutes later, authorities said.

Police are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.

Sixteen-year-old Marcus Weathers was killed, and two other people, including a 14-year-old girl, were wounded in a drive-by shooting late Tuesday in North Lawndale.

Weathers was standing on a front porch in the 1300 block of South Kostner with the girl and a 42-year-old woman about 11:40 p.m. when a car drove by and someone inside fired shots at them, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Weathers, who lived on the same block, was shot in the back, and died at Stroger Hospital. The woman was shot in the right leg and the girl was shot in the back, police said. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized.

Orlando Calderon was killed and a woman wounded in Belmont Cragin on Tuesday afternoon.

About 4:47 p.m., the 18-year-old Calderon and 21-year-old woman were shot in the 6100 block of West Fullerton, police said.

Calderon was shot in the back and was taken to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead at 10 p.m. The medical examiner’s said Calderon lived in the 5000 block of West Fullerton.

The woman was shot in the leg and her condition had stabilized at Loyola, police said.

Kevin Nichols was shot to death while standing on a porch in Austin on Monday night.

Nichols, 25, was standing on a porch with a female in the 400 block of North Lawler about 9:35 p.m., when another male walked up and shot him in the chest, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Nichols, who lived on the same block, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:21 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

Tyris R. Jackson was shot to death while walking in Kenwood on Monday night.

Jackson, 35, was walking in the 4900 block of South Drexel about 8:30 p.m. when a white SUV approached and the front passenger exited the vehicle, pulled a handgun and fired multiple shots, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The shooter then jumped back into the SUV, which sped away northbound.

Jackson, who lived on the same block as the shooting, suffered gunshot wounds to the back and arm, authorities said.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:04 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

Police have opened a homicide investigation after Lloyd A. White was found dead with blunt force head trauma in an Avondale basement Monday morning.

About 11 a.m., the 51-year-old White was found in the basement of a building in the 3900 block of North Spaulding, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. White lived on the same block.

He was dead at the scene, authorities said. An autopsy Tuesday found he died of multiple sharp and blunt-force injuries, and his death was ruled a homicide.

In a message posted on Facebook, Ald. Deb Mell (33rd) said the victim “appears to have known his assailant. This incident appears to be personal in nature, not a gang-related incident.”

In a case that will not be prosecuted as a homicide, a family member has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for what police are calling the accidental shooting of 11-year-old Antwone Price late Wednesday in Greater Grand Crossing.

Eurel Wilford, 19, of Rockford faces one count each of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon with no license for concealed carry, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon without a FOID card, all felonies, according to police.

Antwone was shot in the abdomen about 9 p.m. Wednesday in a home in the 7400 block of South St. Lawrence. Police said Wilford accidentally shot the boy while handling a gun. Antwone died less than an hour later at a hospital.

Wilford, of the 2200 block of Benderwirt Avenue in Rockford, was scheduled to appear in bond court Saturday.

And in the grisliest case of the week, the city was a draining a Garfield Park lagoon where a child’s dismembered hands, feet and head were discovered over the weekend.

A child’s foot was discovered in the lagoon Saturday, sparking a search that has since uncovered several other body parts, including hands and a the head. The medical examiner’s office said the body parts are those of an African American child between 2 and 3 years old.

The office will consult with a dentist and other specialists to glean more information from the badly decomposed body parts, office spokesman Frank Shuftan said Tuesday, adding that DNA samples taken from the remains have been submitted for testing.
