Jermel Clay dies in hospital five days after being shot in Austin


Thirty-year-old Jermel Clay died Wednesday, five days after being shot in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

Clay was one of three men shot about 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in the 400 block of South Central, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Clay, of the 2700 block of West 15th Street, suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and face. He was taken to Loretto Hospital before being transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. He was pronounced dead at 6:52 p.m. Wednesday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

A 38-year-old man was shot in the buttocks and taken to Loretto; while a 41-year-old man was shot in the ankle and right shoulder, and taken to Mount Sinai, according to police. Their conditions were stabilized.
