Alejandro “Jano” Fuentes, a popular Mexican singer who moved to Chicago after appearing on Mexico’s version of “The Voice,” died Saturday, two days after he was shot on his birthday during an attempted carjacking in Brighton Park.

Fuentes, 45, died Saturday after being shot in his car in the 4300 block of South Archer at 10:15 p.m. Thursday, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The medical examiner’s office identified him as Alejandro Fuentes-Rosas.

Police initially said he was dead at the scene, but friends later said he placed on life support until family members could arrive from Mexico.

Fuentes was celebrating his birthday with friends at his performing arts school when he was attacked, authorities said.

He had gotten into his red Audi with friends when a man walked up and ordered him to get out of the vehicle. When he resisted, he was shot three times in the head, police said.

He refused, but got the man pulled a gun and he got out of the car and was shot three times in the head.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:07 p.m. Saturday, authorities said. He lived in the same block where the shooting occurred.

Police said they had no suspects in custody.

Fuentes was a finalist on “La Voz,” Mexico’s version of “The Voice,” in 2011. He moved to Chicago from Guadalajara in 2013, and while still a popular singer, songwriter and choreographer, he spent more time teaching kids at his school, friends said on Facebook.

His school and performing arts studio, Tras Bambalinas, which is Spanish for Backstage, taught young singing, dancing, acting and modeling.

He also taught art to students at Daley Elementary School in Back of the Yards.
