Arthur S. Jones, 29, faces first-degree murder charges for the slaying of the 25-year-old Hampton about 12:30 p.m. on a southbound train near 47th Street, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Jones stabbed her repeatedly during an apparent argument over a child, police allege. Hampton, of the 6600 block of South Laflin, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:15 p.m., authorities said.

Passengers on the train called 911 to report the stabbing, and an officer was already near the 47th Street Red Line stop as the train pulled up, CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. The suspect stepped off the train, saw the officer and surrendered. He was taken to St. Bernard Hospital with minor injuries suffered during the attack, police said.

“This is domestic in nature,” First Deputy Supt. John Escalante said Thursday. “We’re sure of that.”

Jones, who lives in the 5300 block of South Carpenter, is also charged with aggravated battery of a police officer and attempting to disarm an officer, according to Cook County Circuit Court records. A judge ordered him held without bond Saturday, and he is due in court again Monday.

Hampton, a single mother of one, was a graduate of Hirsch High School and studied cosmetology at Olive-Harvey College. Her Facebook profile indicated she was engaged.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with funeral expenses.
