Stephen Toplin was fatally shot in the back on the block where he lived in the Gresham neighborhood late Friday morning.
At 11:33 a.m., Toplin, 24, was sitting in front of a residence in the 7600 block of South Damen when someone walked up to him and began shooting, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Toplin was shot in the back and pronounced dead at 12:03 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said. He lived on the same block where he was killed.
