Medical examiner’s office: Death of Omar Rangel in car in Ashburn reclassified as a suicide

The death of a 20-year-old Omar Rangel, found shot to death in a car last week in the Southwest Side Ashburn neighborhood, has now been classified as a suicide.

Rangel was found unresponsive with gunshot wounds to the head and chest in a parked car in the 8200 block of South Scottsdale at 6:10 a.m. Sept. 25, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Rangel, of the 8400 block of South Kilbourn, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:30 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy found he died of multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was initially ruled a homicide.

However, due to additional evidence obtained form the police investigation, Rangel’s manner of death was changed to suicide, the medical examiner’s office announced Monday morning.
