Drive-by shooting in Austin leaves Jamel Thomas and Jermale Richardson dead

Two young men fatally shot in a drive-by Friday night in the West Side Austin neighborhood have been identified as Jamel Thomas and Jermale Richardson.

About 8 p.m., Thomas, 18; and Richardson, 20, were standing next to a parked car in the 5500 block of West Congress Parkway. That’s when a grey car pulled up and someone inside fired shots, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The car then drove away west on Congress.

Thomas, who lived on the same block as the shooting, was struck in the head, and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:21 p.m., authorities said.

Richardson, of the 1100 block of South Albany, suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and was also taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m., authorities said.

Area North detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.
