78-year-old Robert Bishop dies of injuries suffered in 2007 assault near his Washington Park home

The death of 78-year-old Robert Bishop last week has been attributed to injuries he suffered when he was assaulted in 2007 in the Washington Park neighborhood.

Bishop died Monday, Oct. 24, at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy Saturday found he died of complications of a traumatic brain injury suffered in the assault. His death was ruled a homicide.

Bishop was assaulted with “broom handles and sharp objects” on May 8, 2007, in the 5100 block of South Calumet, the medical examiner’s office said. He lived on the same block as the incident.

The medical examiner’s office said someone was in custody in connection with the assault, but could not immediately provide additional information early Monday. Chicago Police could not provide any additional information.
