16-year-old Darmayah ‘Bug’ Smith shot to death just three blocks from his Far South Side home

Sixteen-year-old Darmayah Smith, known to friends as “Bug,” died nine hours after he was shot Wednesday evening near his home in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.

The boy was walking at 6:23 p.m. in the 11000 block of South Edbrooke when someone approached on foot and opened fire, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Smith, who lived three blocks away, suffered gunshot wounds to the torso and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

He was pronounced dead at 3:58 a.m. Thursday, authorities said.

No one was in custody.
