Mauriaze Cossom shot to death while walking with another man early Sunday in West Town

The first of two fatal shootings in a span of about 15 minutes early Sunday in the West Town neighborhood on the Near West Side claimed the life of Mauriaze Waltize Cossom.

Two men, including Cossom, were walking on the sidewalk about 3 a.m. in the 200 block of North Leavitt, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

At least two suspects opened fire at them as they walked, police said.

The 33-year-old Cossom was shot in the back and leg, according to authorities. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 3:55 a.m. He lived in the North Lawndale neighborhood.

A 34-year-old was also taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the right leg, police said. His condition was stabilized.

Less than 15 minutes later, another man was killed about three blocks west in the same neighborhood.
