Stray bullet kills 56-year-old Tyrone Burdine on the block where he lived in Austin

Tyrone Burdine was killed by a stray bullet, and another man was wounded, in a drive-by shooting Tuesday night on the Austin neighborhood block where he lives.

About 8:15 p.m., someone fired shots from a vehicle in the 1600 block of North Major, according to Chicago Police.

Burdine, 56, was standing in front of a home and was struck in the head by an errant shot, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Burdine, who lives on the block, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead more than four hours later at 12:43 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

He was not thought to be an intended target of the shooting.

A 19-year-old man walking on the street was shot in the back, police said. He was also taken to Loyola, where he was listed in serious condition.
