Levon ‘CeeJay’ Averhart shot to death when gunman jumps out of vehicle and opens fire in Uptown

Young father Levon S. Averhart Jr. was shot to death Sunday morning when someone jumped out of a passing vehicle and opened fire in the Uptown neighborhood on the North Side.

The 23-year-old Averhart, who was known as “CeeJay,” was in the 1000 block of West Montrose at 6:52 a.m. when a black vehicle approached, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Someone wearing a black hooded sweatshirt got out of the vehicle and started shooting, police said.

Averhart suffered two gunshot wounds to the torso, and was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died at 7:35 a.m., authorities said.

The father of three lived in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.
