Jose Carlos Romero Hernadez dies, second man wounded in drive-by shooting in Logan Square

Jose Carlos Romero Hernadez died Sunday morning, more than 16 hours after he and another man were wounded in a Logan Square neighborhood drive-by shooting on the Northwest Side.

Romero Hernadez, 21, and a 20-year-old man were walking at 6:26 p.m. in the 2700 block of North Monticello, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A dark-colored SUV pulled up and someone inside opened fire before the vehicle sped away, police said.

Romero Hernadez was shot in the head, while the younger man suffered a gunshot wound to the left thigh. They were both taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where the younger man was pronounced dead at 11:12 a.m. Sunday, authorities said.

He lived in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.

The younger man’s condition was stabilized, police said.
