An elderly woman found fatally stabbed after an apartment fire early Monday in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood has been identified as Josephine Johnson.
Johnson, 89, was discovered by firefighters in an apartment about 2:50 a.m. in a three-story building in the 5100 block of South Michigan, according to Fire Media Affairs and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The fire appears to have started in her first-floor apartment, where she was found with multiple stab wounds, authorities said.
Johnson was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 3:03 a.m., authorities said.
An autopsy found she died of multiple blunt and sharp force injuries from an assault, and her death was ruled a homicide. Read more

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with killing DeAngelo Birge and wounding another man in a West Garfield Park shooting earlier this month.
The two 24-year-old men were sitting in a vehicle in the 4400 block of West Maypole about 3:15 p.m. Oct. 6 when the boy walked up, fired into the car and ran away, according to Chicago Police.
Birge was shot in the head and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 4200 block of West Jackson.
The other man also was taken to Stroger with a gunshot wound to the hand. His condition stabilized, police said. Read more
A person who was being questioned by police after Rashad Stokes was shot to death early Monday in the West Side Austin neighborhood has been released.
Stokes, 29, was standing on the sidewalk in the 4800 block of West Madison about 1:30 a.m. when a male suspect walked up and fired shots, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Stokes, of the 5200 block of West Congress Parkway, suffered at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
An autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound to the face, and ruled his death a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.
A person of interest was being questioned in connection with the homicide Monday morning, but police said Wednesday that person had been released without charges.
A teenage boy has found guilty of fatally shooting 16-year-old Darren Foggey through a bedroom window last year in the Southwest Side Chicago Lawn neighborhood.
Rasaan Price was found guilty of murder Thursday after a four-day jury trial, according to Cook County court records. Price was 15 when the shooting happened on July 23, 2014.
Foggey was watching television with friends in his bedroom in the 6700 block of South Artesian Avenue when Price walked up and fired a single shot into the first-floor window about 9:25 p.m., according to prosecutors. Read more

At least eight people died from gun violence last week in Chicago, including a man who passed away six months after being shot on the West Side.
A ninth homicide occurred when a German woman was fatally struck by a vehicle on Lake Shore Drive, an incident that led to the motorcyclist being charged with reckless homicide.
Perry Burrell was fatally shot early Sunday in West Garfield Park.
Burrell, 26, was found with a gunshot wound to the head about 2:45 a.m. in a vehicle that had crashed into a tree in the 4500 block of West Adams, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Burrell, of the 2300 block of North Avers, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner’s office.
An 18-year-old man has been charged with shooting his younger brother, 17-year-old Ryan Nicholson, to death during an argument Friday afternoon in the Jefferson Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.
Brad Nicholson is charged with first-degree murder for the shooting of his younger brother, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
About 3 p.m. Friday, Brad Nicholson was arguing with his parents and brother in the living room of their home in the 5100 block of North Austin Avenue, according to prosecutors.
The brothers went into the bedroom they shared and continued arguing, prosecutors said. Brad Richardson at some point grabbed a loaded .45 caliber handgun and pointed it at his brother. Read more

Charles Lyons, of the 9400 block of South Spaulding in Evergreen Park, faces felony counts of reckless homicide with a motor vehicle, and aggravated reckless driving resulting in bodily harm, according to Chicago Police.
About 10:25 p.m. Monday, Lyons rode between stopped cars in the 700 block of South Lake Shore Drive and struck a man and woman as they were crossing the street, police said.
The woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified her as the 25-year-old Kutscheidt, a resident of Germany. Read more
Malek Taylor died Friday, two days after he was shot in the head in a drive-by in the South Side Chatham neighborhood.
Taylor, 31, was outside in the 8700 block of South Wabash about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside shot him in the head, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The vehicle then drove off southbound on Wabash.
Taylor, of the 9500 block of South Forest Avenue, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 2:01 p.m. Friday, according to the medical examiner’s office.
