John Stewart killed when argument leads to shootout in Bronzeville


An argument that led to an exchange of gunfire Thursday morning in Bronzeville left 39-year-old John Stewart dead and another man wounded.

The two men started shooting at each other during an argument about 5:10 a.m. in the 4700 block of South King Drive, according to Chicago Police.

Stewart was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived on the block where he died, authorities said.

The other man, 52, was shot in the knee and shin, and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition, police said.

Police said it wasn’t clear Friday night whether criminal charges would be filed in the case.

Troy Burtin fatally shot in East Garfield Park


Troy Burtin was shot and killed early Wednesday in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.

Officers responding to a call of a person shot at 12:20 a.m. in the 2700 block of West Lexington found the 25-year-old unresponsive on a sidewalk with gunshot wounds to the head, chest and groin, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Burtin, of the 2800 block of West Polk, was pronounced dead at the scene minutes later, authorities said.
Police are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.

Craig Bannister dies three days after being shot in East Garfield Park


Craig Bannister died Wednesday afternoon of injuries he suffered in an East Garfield Park shooting that left another man wounded early Sunday.

The two men, 28 and 30, were standing outside about 4 a.m. in the 3300 block of West Walnut when someone walked up and fired shots, according to Chicago Police.

Bannister, 28, of the 400 block of North Central, was shot in the head and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died Wednesday at 12:04 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy Friday ruled his death a homicide.

The older man was shot in the left thigh and was taken to Mount Sinai, where his condition was stabilized.

Police are investigating whether the shootings were gang-relaed.

Mister was outside standing with friends in the 1600 block of West 115th Place about 2:45 a.m. when the suspect walked up and fired a handgun several times, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Mister, who lived in the 10600 block of South Church, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she died at 5:35 a.m., authorities said.

The attack happened at 2:17 a.m. when 28-year-old Michael Laster and 33-year-old Jonathon Thompson shot the men in the 5000 block of North Winthrop, Chicago Police said.

Anderson, 34, of the 7900 block of South Ridgeland was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died at 2:55 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A 32-year-old man, whose identity had not been released as of Friday morning, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Vuan Evans was killed and two other men were injured in a shooting Wednesday morning in South Shore.

Just after 9 a.m., the three men were standing outside in the 2600 block of East 74th Place when someone walked up and started shooting, according to Chicago Police.

Evans, 25, was taken to South Shore Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:40 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 3100 block of South Cheltenham Place.

A 29-year-old man shot in the back was taken to Stroger Hospital and remained in critical condition early Thursday. Police initially said that man had also died.

A 50-year-old man was taken to Jackson Park Hospital. He was in good condition and was expected to be released, police said.

Ira Washington was found dead in the hallway of a building on the block where he lived in South Shore on Wednesday, and an autopsy showed the 60-year-old died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Washington was found dead in the hallway of a building in the 6800 block of South Merrill shortly after 9 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He lived on the same block, according to the medical examiner’s office.
