The death of Edward Maslon, who was discovered injured during a fire in May in the Northwest Side Avondale neighborhood, has been ruled a homicide.
Maslon, 61, was found under the rubble in a second-floor living room of an apartment building in the 3900 block of West School Street as firefighters fought a blaze about 5:30 a.m. May 20, according to the Chicago Fire Department and Cook County medical examiner’s office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy later found that Maslon, who had no known home address, died of blunt- and sharp-force injuries, and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.
A fire official said at the time that Maslon had been hired to watch the two-unit apartment building as it underwent renovations.
LaSean Barnes was fatally shot in the East Garfield Park neighborhood Sunday afternoon.
Barnes, 38, was in the 3200 block of West Maypole Avenue when someone fired shots from a passing conversion van about 3:20 p.m., authorities said. Read more

Police said four people were denied entry to a party in the 6100 block of South Honore Street about 12:45 a.m. Sunday. The group responded by surrounding the party and opening fire — striking three people outside, police said. Read more
