Man found fatally shot in West Garfield Park identified as 37-year-old Askie Wajd

A man found shot to death in the West Garfield Park neighborhood Thursday morning has been identified as West Side resident Askie Wajd.

Wajd, 37, was found unresponsive on the ground just before 5 a.m. in the 4600 block of West Monroe, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the side of the head, authorities said. He lived about two blocks away in the 4500 block of West Jackson.

Area North detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.

Two teenagers have been charged with fatally shooting Shari Graham as she sat in a cab last month in the Armour Square neighborhood on the South Side.

Natrell Jackson, 18; Michael Whitehead, 16, are charged with first-degree murder for the Feb. 26 fatal shooting of the 30-year-old mother of three, according to Chicago Police.

Graham, of the 7700 block of South Paulina, was sitting in the back of a cab in the 3800 block of South Princeton Avenue about 9:45 p.m. when shots were fired, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. A bullet went through the rear of the car and struck her in the back.

The cab driver drove away from the scene to the 4700 block of South State Street, then called paramedics. Graham, of the 7700 block of South Paulina, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she died at 10:31 p.m., authorities said.

Ricardo Montes was fatally shot early Saturday in the Avondale neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Montes, 22, was on a sidewalk in the 3200 block of West Addison about 3:30 a.m. when someone opened fire from a passing SUV, Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Montes, who lived in the 3700 block of North Albany, was shot in the back and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he later died, authorities said.

William Smith fatally shot in West Garfield Park

William Smith man was fatally shot Friday night in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

The 24-year-old was standing outside in the 3800 block of West Flournoy shortly after 8 p.m. when someone walked up and shot him in the head, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Smith was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:46 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the 900 block of North Springfield.

A woman has been charged with fatally stabbing her boyfriend, Ronald Thomas, to death during aargument Wednesday night in his South Loop apartment.

Caress T. Shumaker, 29, is accused of stabbing the 27-year-old Thomas in the chest at 8:40 p.m. during an argument in the apartment in the 2100 block of South Michigan Avenue, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Thomas was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said. An autopsy Thursday showed he died of a stab wound to the chest, and ruled his death a homicide.

Shumaker also lives in the 2100 block of South Michigan, but it was unclear whether she lived in the same apartment. She has been charged with first-degree murder, police said.

She was ordered held on a $500,000 bond and her next court hearing was set for March 30.

27-year-old Paul Woods fatally shot in South Shore

Paul Woods was shot to death Thursday afternoon while standing on a corner in the South Shore neighborhood.

The 27-year-old Woods was standing with a group on the corner 78th and Yates at 4:53 p.m. when someone opened fire, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was shot once in the back and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:32 p.m.

Woods lived in the 8400 block of South Essex.

At vigil for slain Daysha Wright on Near West Side, family promises her young son will be ‘well taken care of’

A candlelight vigil was held Wednesday evening at the scene where aspiring nurse Daysha Wright was fatally shot earlier in the day.

About 100 people gathered just east of the corner of Maypole and Hoyne on the Near West Side to mourn the loss of the 21-year-old.

Dozens of friends, neighbors and family members gathered with balloons, posters and photos of Wright, who was studying to become a nurse, according to her family.

About 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, Wright was a passenger in a vehicle in the 2100 block of West Maypole. That’s when someone fired shots and she was hit in the back, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A Milwaukee woman was ordered held on a $1 million bond Wednesday for allegedly stabbing Ismael Rangel to death during a robbery on the Southwest Side three years ago.

Alashonza Johnson, who was living in the Chicago area at the time of the 2013 incident, was arrested this week at the Milwaukee County Jail and returned to Chicago, where she admitted to detectives that she stabbed the 38-year-old Rangel, Cook County prosecutors said.

Johnson’s relationship to Rangel was unclear, but Assistant State’s Attorney Lesley Gool said Rangel and his friend were “set up” to meet Johnson and a married female pal for the first time on Sept. 10, 2013.

The men picked up the other woman and Johnson, then 20, at a Burger King near 65th and Kedzie, according to prosecutors.

19-year-old Cesar Perez fatally shot just outside Blue Line subway stop in Wicker Park

Cesar Perez was shot to death Wednesday evening at a bus stop near a busy Wicker Park intersection.

The 19-year-old was standing on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of North Milwaukee, in front of the Division Blue Line stop, at 6:05 p.m. when someone walked up to him and fired shots, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Perez was shot in the head and abdomen, and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:37 p.m., authorities said.

Perez lived in the 1400 block of West Division, just a few blocks from where the shooting happened.

Ald. Brian Hopkins said the shooter was a Hispanic man in his 20s, weighing about 150 and standing about 5-foot-7. He was wearing a red Chicago Bulls jacket as he ran away north on Ashland.

Man fatally shot in Chicago Lawn identified as 31-year-old Gerardo Rodriguez

A man who was shot to death Tuesday in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side has been identified as Gerardo Rodriguez.

The 31-year-old Rodriguez was walking with a friend northbound in the 6300 block of South Troy Street at 7:52 p.m. when shots rang out and he collapsed, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was shot in the neck, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 8:41 p.m., authorities said.

Rodriguez lived in the 6200 block of South Francisco, just a few blocks away from the shooting.
