Maurice Jackson of Minneapolis was visiting his family for Thanksgiving when he was killed in a shooting early Sunday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Family members identified the 27-year-old, who had been living in Minneapolis for three years, but came back to the neighborhood in which he grew up to spend Thanksgiving weekend.

The father of three, whose youngest daughter is 3 months old, was supposed to head back to Minnesota later Sunday.

About 12:20 a.m., Jackson and his girlfriend were sitting in a parked Dodge car in the 5300 block of South Union when a male suspect exited a dark-colored car nearby and opened fire, according to Chicago Police.

Tyris Washington fatally shot in West Englewood


Tyris Washington was shot to death in the West Englewood neighborhood Saturday evening.

Just after 5 p.m., the 26-year-old was in the backyard of a home in the 6600 block of South Marshfield when someone got out of a vehicle, walked up and started shooting, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He suffered wounds to the abdomen and hand, and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m., authorities said.

Carlos Romo found with fatal gunshot wound in van on block where he lived in Little Village


Carlos Romo was shot to death on the block where he lived in the Little Village neighborhood late Saturday.

Romo, 32, was found unresponsive in a parked van about 8:55 p.m. in the 2700 block of West 24th Street, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was shot in the chest, police said.

Romo, who lived on the same block, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:18 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

Christopher Williams fatally shot in Greater Grand Crossing


Christopher Williams died Friday morning, about four hours after being shot in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.

Williams, 31, was walking in the 7800 block of South Maryland about 1:30 a.m. when a male suspect got out of an SUV and shot him several times, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Williams, of the 800 block of East 78th Street, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 5 a.m., authorities said.

An autopsy Saturday found he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide.

Hommy Vega fatally shot while sitting in vehicle in West Garfield Park


Hommy Vega was fatally shot Friday afternoon in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

The 36-year-old Vega was sitting in a vehicle about 1:20 p.m. in the 0-100 block of North Hamlin Boulevard when someone fired shots, hitting him in the right side of the chest, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Vega, of the 1300 block of West Chicago Avenue, was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:58 p.m., authorities said.

Judge to man accused of killing 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee: You are a danger. No bail.

A South Side man man was ordered held without bond Friday for the murder of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee, the Chicago.

In addition to Corey Morgan, at least two others were involved in the fatal shooting after Tyshawn was lured into an alley while he was playing basketball nearby, authorities said.

“This is a crime that shook our city. … It was an act of barbarism, the assassination of a 9-year-old child as a gang retaliation to get back at his father,” Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told reporters.

Morgan’s arrest was announced on Twitter early Friday by Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas lambasted Morgan for “hunting every day with a firearm a week in retaliation.”

“There is nothing this court can do to save grandmas,” the judge said. “You are a danger not only to your self, to your community. No bail!”

Gang member charged with slaying of Tyshawn Lee, second suspect in custody, warrant issued for third

A man has been charged with the murder of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

Two other gang members are also involved with the murder, Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said at a news conference.

Corey Morgan was charged with first-degree murder for the Nov. 2 shooting, according to Sally Daly, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. He was expected to appear in bond court Saturday.

The arrest was announced on Twitter early Friday by Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Police were able to narrow in on the suspects with “forensic evidence and community involvement,” McCarthy said.

“We got an awful lot of intelligence from the community,” he said. “This was very clearly not a case of ‘no-snitching’ but there was a lot of fear.”

Jontaye Walker fatally shot on Thanksgiving in West Ridge


A Thanksgiving Day shooting left Jontaye Walker dead in the West Ridge neighborhood on the North Side.

Walker, 23, was standing outside in the 2200 block of West Thome Avenue about 1:15 p.m. when someone got out of a vehicle nearby, walked up and opened fire, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Police said the shooter then jumped back into a dark green minivan, which sped away northbound.

Walker, of the 6200 block of North Bell Avenue, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body, and was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:29 p.m., authorities said.

16-year-old Mysean Dunning fatally shot near his East Garfield Park home


Sixteen-year-old Mysean DUnning was fatally shot Wednesday night in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

Just before midnight, two people walked up to Mysean Dunning near his home in the 3300 block of West Van Buren Street and shot him in the head, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was dead at the scene, authorities said.

Two men have been charged with the fatal shooting of Jacques Barnes, whom prosecutors called a rival gang member, Sunday afternoon in Englewood.

Antonio Doss 31; and Kwan Ward, 20, are each charged with one count of first-degree murder, according to Chicago Police.

Doss was driving a van westbound on 71st Street and pulled over to the curb after he passed Barnes’ car, according to Cook County prosecutors.

Ward got out of the van, walked up to the van where Barnes was sitting, pulled out a handgun and shot the 20-year-old about 11 times, according to prosecutors.
