Raymond Pryor was shot to death early Friday near his home in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the South Side.
About 12:10 a.m., the 25-year-old Pryor was found unresponsive on the sidewalk in the 6400 block of South Western Avenue. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Pryor, who lived one block north, was pronounced dead 20 minutes later, according to the medical examiner’s office.
When Cedric Goodwin was fatally shot over a year ago in the South Shore neighborhood, he was walking to school with his younger brother.
“I believe he was trying to shield his younger brother from being shot,” said his mother, Tiffany Collins, who is still trying to cope with the loss of her son.
And to understand why.
“Cedric was not affiliated with any gangs,” Collins said. “I don’t believe he was a part of any gang. If he was in a gang, I never knew anything about it.”
“He wasn’t a bad kid,” his mother said, though he did get into trouble once for possession of a firearm. “After that he was pretty much on the straight and narrow.” Read more
A woman has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for the fatal beating of 9-month-old Aiden Dukes, who was in her care in the South Shore neighborhood when he died in 2013.
Patricia McKinney, 32, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of murder, according to Cook County court records.

Arturo Pina was fatally shot Monday night in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
Pina, 37, was walking in the 2800 block of South Kedvale Avenue at 7:36 p.m. when someone walked up to him from a gangway and fired shots, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
He was shot in the face and back, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:13 p.m., authorities said.
Pina lived less than half a mile away in the 2700 block of South Komensky, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Eighteen-year-old Diangelo Black died Saturday night, two days after being critically injured in a Humboldt Park shooting that also claimed the life of Deandre Trotter.
Trotter and Black were standing in the 3400 block of West Chicago at 3:26 p.m. Thursday when two males dressed all in black ran up, opened fire and ran away, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Both men suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were taken to Stroger Hospital, authorities said.
Trotter, who lived in the 10900 block of South Racine, was pronounced dead at 4:02 p.m. that day, the medical examiner’s office said.
Black, who lived in the 11100 block of South Edbrooke, was pronounced dead at 9:13 p.m. Saturday.
A GoFundMe page has been established to help cover funeral expenses for the 23-year-old Trotter.
Marcus Smith was dropped off at a Far South Side hospital with a gunshot wound early last THursday, and just mintues later, the south suburban resident was dead.
The 28-year-old was left at Roseland Community Hospital at 45 W. 111th St. about 4:51 a.m. April 7 with a gunshot wound to the torso, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Smith, of the 2200 block of Spaulding Avenue in Dixmoor, was pronounced dead at 5:05 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
Police are trying to determine where the shooting happened. Area South detectives are handling the homicide investigation.

Even unseasonably cold weather didn’t stop the violence last week in Chicago, where at least 11 people were fatally shot and another man was stabbed to death. A 13th fatality, also linked to gun violence, was a man who died six years after being shot on the West Side.
The latest fatality was man found shot to death Sunday morning in the Marquette Park neighborhood. Officers responding about 11:25 a.m. to a call of a person on the ground found 18-year-old Dennis Bradford III unresponsive in the 6500 block of South Fairfield, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Bradford, who lived in the 6200 block of South Mozart, had suffered gunshot wounds to the head and wrist, and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
A 28-year-old man died Sunday morning after being dropped off at a Far South Side hospital with a gunshot wound to the left hip, according to police. Read more

Two men were charged with the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Jonathan B. Sanchez last week in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.
Decorian Collins, 22; and Lamar Williams, 24, are both charged with first-degree murder for shooting Sanchez, according to Chicago Police.
About 11:50 p.m. Thursday, officers found Sanchez lying on the sidewalk in the 4700 block of West Huron with a gunshot wound to the head, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Read more
