Woman released without charges after fatal stabbing of Joshua Dean called self-defense

A woman taken into custody following the fatal stabbing of Joshua Dean last week has been released after police said she was acting in self-defense.

The 21-year-old Dean was stabbed Friday morning in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.

Officers responding to a call of a person stabbed about 8:40 a.m. at a home in the 12100 block of South Bishop found him unresponsive with a chest wound, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Dean was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 9:55 a.m., authorities said. An autopsy Saturday ruled his death a homicide.

Police said the attack was domestic-related. A woman was arrested at the scene, but police said Wednesday that she has been released without charges.

A police source said the woman acted in self-defense, and there was a history of domestic violence between the couple.

Man fatally shot in Bronzeville apartment identified as Courtney Caldwell


A 25-year-old man who was shot to death during an argument Saturday afternoon in Bronzeville has been identified Courtney Caldwell, and his alleged killer is in custody.

Caldwell was shot three times inside an apartment in the 700 block of East 47th Street about noon Saturday, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Caldwell, of the 7100 block of South South Shore Drive, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:43 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

Marvin Lee, 34, was arrested after the shooting and faces one count of first-degree murder, according to police.

Timothy Jones fatally shot in South Shore


Timothy Jones was shot to death Tuesday afternoon in the South Shore neighborhood.

Jones, 29, was outside in the 7200 block of South Exchange about 4 p.m. when someone walked up and shot him in the head, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Jones, who lived in the 1600 block of East 67th, was dead at the scene, authorities said.

Patricia Chew and her mother, Lolita Wells, killed when gunmen fire on car outside Back of the Yards home

Persha Chew was carrying some groceries into her Back of the Yards home Monday evening, when she heard seven gunshots, and before long she got the unthinkable news: Her sister, Patricia Chew; and her mother, Lolita Wells, were dead; and her 11-month-old nephew was wounded.

Persha Chew raced outside to find the the baby and her pregnant sister on the ground and bloody.

The baby survived and was in stable condition, but his mother and grandmother were killed, police said. Two other men who were with the women, all returning from a family outing, were also wounded.

A barbecue at a South Side park was interrupted by gunfire early Tuesday, leaving Antian Hardmon, Ayanna Northern, and Tyrone Spikes dead, and three other people injured in the Fuller Park neighborhood.

About 30 people were enjoying the barbecue, a memorial for someone who died in a crash years ago, when more than 15 shots rang out, according to a woman who wished to be identified only as “Shorty.”

Five people were shot about 12:10 a.m. in the 300 block of West 42nd Street when two males opened fire from an alley, according to Chicago Police. Lawn chairs and beer cans could be seen strewn about the edge of the park at the end of the block.

Hardmon, 25, of the 7200 block of South Langley, was shot in the head, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:05 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Bond was denied Sunday for a man charged with a fatal shooting in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side this weekend.

Marvin Lee, 34, faces one count of first-degree murder, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

About noon Saturday, Lee opened fire during an argument with a 25-year-old man inside an apartment in the 700 block of East 47th Street, police said.

The victim suffered three gunshot wounds, and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:43 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. His name was not released as of early Tuesday pending notification of family.

18-year-old Dwayne Frazier Jr. fatally shot in East Garfield Park


Dwayne Frazier Jr. was fatally shot Monday morning in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

The shooting happened in the 100 block of North Kedzie at 10:52 a.m., Chicago Police said.

The 18-year-old Frazier was shot multiple times in the chest and arm, and was driven to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Frazier, of the 2600 block of West Gladys, was pronounced dead at 11:17 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

WEEK IN REVIEW: At least 11 people killed in Chicago violence

At least 11 people died from violence in Chicago last week, including four killed over a bloody weekend during which more than 50 other people were wounded by gunfire.

The week’s latest homicide was a man shot Sunday afternoon in North Lawndale, one of at least 57 people shot over the weekend.

About 3 p.m., Quinton D. Goins, 25, was inside a car in the 3900 block of West Roosevelt Road when another car drove by and people from inside both cars began shooting at each other, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Goins, of the 3000 block of West Flournoy Street, was shot in the back and shoulder, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was died at 2:42 p.m., authorities said.

Man found shot to death after ‘suspicious’ Morgan Park fire identified as Timothy Lawrence


A man found shot to death after a “suspicious” explosion and fire at a Morgan Park neighborhood house two weeks ago has been identified as 48-year-old Timothy D. Lawrence.

About 12:40 a.m. Sept. 14, firefighters responded to a report of an explosion and fire at a single-story home in the 10800 block of South Morgan Street, according to Fire Media Affairs.

A 48-year-old man, identified as Timothy D. Lawrence, was found unresponsive at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy found he died of a gunshot wound to the head and his death was ruled a homicide.

The fire was extinguished at 1:22 a.m. and no one else was injured, fire officials said.
