Marcus Cox fatally shot in Longwood Manor


Marcus Cox was shot to death early Sunday in the Longwood Manor neighborhood on the South Side.

Cox, 28, was standing outside about 4:20 a.m. in the 9600 block of South Morgan when someone fired shots in his direction, striking him in the abdomen, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Cox, who lived on the same block as the shooting, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 3:19 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

Abraham Barrera fatally shot, second man wounded while driving in Pilsen


Abraham Barrera was killed and another man critically critically wounded in a shooting early Sunday in the Pilsen neighborhood.

About 3:20 a.m., the men, ages 23 and 24, were driving in the 1100 West block of 18th Street when someone walked out of an alley and opened fire, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Both men were shot in the head.

The younger man, Barrera, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:33 a.m., authorities said. He lived in the 4100 block of West 58th Place.

The 24-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Police are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.

A man has been charged with a South Shore neighborhood shooting that left Vuan Evans dead and two others wounded earlier this month.

Shawn Black, 26, faces one count of first-degree murder and two counts each of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm for the attack that happened about 9 a.m. Sept. 2, Chicago Police announced Sunday.

The three victims were standing outside in the 2600 block of East 74th Place when Black walked up and started shooting, police said.

Woman in custody after Joshua Dean fatally stabbed in West Pullman


A woman is in custody for the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old Joshua Dean in the West Pullman neighborhood Friday morning in what police are calling a domestic incident.

Officers responding to a call of a person stabbed about 8:40 a.m. at a home in the 12100 block of South Bishop found Dean unresponsive with a chest wound, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 9:55 a.m., authorities said.

Police said the attack was domestic-related. An autopsy Saturday ruled his death a homicide.

A woman was arrested at the scene and charges were pending against her Saturday afternoon, police said.

About 12:50 a.m. Tuesday, the 21-year-old Velazquez was standing on a corner in the 5800 block of South Pulaski when he shouted gang slogans at a vehicle and threw a can at it, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Someone in the vehicle then opened fire, striking him in the head, police said.

Neal Bratcher fatally shot in Burnside


A man who died after being shot late Wednesday in the Burnside neighborhood on the South Side has been identified as 48-year-old Neal Bratcher.

About 11:10 p.m., Bratcher was standing on a sidewalk in the 9200 block of South University when someone walked up and opened fire, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Bratcher was shot in the chest, leg and face and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 12:06 a.m. Thursday, authorities said. His home address was unknown.

Ceremony to honor victims of violence and provide support for families and loved ones left behind

Jeffrey Maldonado, an aspiring artist and musician, was fatally shot on the day after his 19th birthday in 2009 in Pilsen.

Cassandra Suggs-McRoy was strangled by her abusive husband after obtaining an order of protection against him in 2002.

They are just two of the homicide victims to be memorialized on Saturday at UIC during a special ceremony led by county prosecutors that will also recognize the surviving families and loved ones.

The parents of Maldonado and Suggs-McRoy will be among the speakers at the event, arranged by the State’s Attorney’s Victim Witness Assistance Unit.

State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez will recognize surviving loved ones at the ceremony, designed to “memorialize victims of violent crime and to help survivors embrace and honor those lost to violence,” a spokesman for the state’s attorney’s office said.

Along with the memorials and personal reflections, the event will include an on-site support group for those looking for help; and a display of more than 100 photo boards assembled by family members with photos of those lost to violence.

The free event begins at 11 a.m. at the UIC Forum at 725 W. Roosevelt Rd.

South Side man charged with fatal shooting of Marsolino White in Burnside

A South Side man has been charged with the fatal shooting of Marsolino White in the Burnside neighborhood on Tuesday.

Stephen Crump, 27, faces one count of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting that left the 28-year-old White dead, according to Chicago Police.

About 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, White was shot in the head in the 9200 block of South Cottage Grove, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. White, of the 7700 block of South Coles, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Crump, of the 300 block of East 70th Place, was ordered held without bond, and is due back n court Oct. 13.

Jermel Clay dies in hospital five days after being shot in Austin


Thirty-year-old Jermel Clay died Wednesday, five days after being shot in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

Clay was one of three men shot about 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in the 400 block of South Central, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Clay, of the 2700 block of West 15th Street, suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and face. He was taken to Loretto Hospital before being transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. He was pronounced dead at 6:52 p.m. Wednesday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

A 38-year-old man was shot in the buttocks and taken to Loretto; while a 41-year-old man was shot in the ankle and right shoulder, and taken to Mount Sinai, according to police. Their conditions were stabilized.

Darian Gunn fatally shot in South Commons drive-by


Darian Gunn was fatally shot Thursday afternoon in the South Commons neighborhood.

About 3:35 p.m., the 20-year-old Gunn was standing in the street in the 3000 block of South Michigan Avenue when a gunman in a dark-colored car opened fire, striking him in the back and buttocks, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The car then continued eastbound on Cermak Road, police said.

Gunn was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 4:13 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the 2300 block of East 70th Street.
