Fredrick Vasquez was killed early Sunday in a Humboldt Park neighborhood shooting on the West Side.

Vasquez, 29, was standing on the sidewalk at 1:28 a.m. in the 1000 block of North Monticello when someone in a gray vehicle opened fire, striking him in the chest, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was taken to Norwegian American Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:04 a.m., authorities said.

Cristian Rodriguez shot to death while walking in Back of the Yards

Cristian Rodriguez was shot to death Sunday evening in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.

About 5:10 p.m., the 24-year-old Rodriguez was walking in the 4700 block of South Winchester when a green-colored vehicle pulled up, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Someone got out of the car and shot Rodriguez in the abdomen and right leg, authorities said.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:48 p.m., authorities said.

He lived in the West Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Jose Maldonado of Justice dies three days after being shot while driving with woman in Gage Park

Jose D. Maldonado of southwest suburban Justice died early Sunday morning, three days after he and a woman were shot in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Maldonado, 36; and the 30-year-old woman were in a vehicle at 12:12 a.m. Thursday heading east in the 2800 block of West 59th Street, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. That’s when they heard gunfire and felt pain.

Maldonado was shot in the head and chest, authorities said. The woman was shot in the right shoulder.

Both were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where Maldonado died at 1:31 a.m. Sunday, authorities said. The woman’s condition was stabilized.

An autopsy Monday found Maldonado died of a gunshot wound to the head and his death was ruled a homicide.

Xavier Joy came back to work with underprivileged children, but ended up shot to death in Woodlawn robbery attempt

A former college football player and son of a Chicago political reformer, Xavier O. Joy had come back to Chicago to work with disadvantaged children.

But on Thursday, the Whitney Young High School graduate and former football player at Morehouse College in Atlanta was fatally shot about 10 p.m. near his apartment in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood, just blocks from the University of Chicago campus, authorities said.

Officers found the 23-year-old Joy in a parking lot in the 6200 block of South Ingleside. Shot several times, he was pronounced dead at 10:23 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Family members believe he was killed in a robbery attempt because his cell phone was not found.

Joy’s father, Ra Joy, is executive director of CHANGE Illinois, a coalition of organizations that is “leading systemic political and government reform,” according to its website.

Isaac Reed of Cicero gunned down on Southwest Side while taking his two young children to play in the park

Isaac Reed of west suburban Cicero died about five hours after being shot while taking two young children to the park Thursday afternoon in the Southwest Side Brighton Park neighborhood.

The 25-year-old Reed was walking on the sidewalk in the 4600 block of South Troy at 1:07 p.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

His father, also Isaac Reed, said in a GoFundMe page post that his son was walking with his two young children on the way to play in the park.

That’s when two male suspects pulled out guns, according to police. The father of two reportedly begged the men not to shoot him in front of his children, but they fired shots at him anyway before running off.

Louis ‘Sticks’ Chamness shot to death while driving in Belmont Central

Louis “Sticks” Chamness was killed in a shooting while driving in the Belmont Central neighborhood Friday evening on the Northwest Side.

About 6:45 p.m., the 21-year-old Chamness was driving in the 5700 block of West Belden, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

People in a dark-colored car fired shots at his vehicle, and Chamness was struck in the chest.

His car then slammed into a parked car and flipped onto its side, police said.

Chamness was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died at 7:28 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the Belmont Gardens neighborhood.

Chamness, a father of three who worked as a caprenter, had attended Kelvyn Park High School. He was known to friends as “Sticks.”

No one was in custody for the killing as of Monday morning.

Naperville resident Romaine Elkins returns to Chicago, where he is fatally shot in Austin drive-by

Romaine L. Elkins, a former Chicago resident who had moved to west suburban Naperville, was fatally shot on Friday evening in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

About 5:15 p.m., the 18-year-old Elkins was standing in the 1500 block of North Linder, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office

A dark-colored SUV drove past and at least one person inside started firing in his direction, and Elkins was shot in the chest, according to authorities.

The Naperville resident was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died at 5:52 p.m., authorities said.

After the shooting, the SUV sped west on Le Moyne and crashed into another vehicle, police said. A 71-year-old woman in the other vehicle suffered injuries in the crash, but was listed in good condition.

No one was in custody as of Monday morning.

Man fatally shot while playing basketball on Englewood street identified as 26-year-old Malcolm Gayles Jr.

Two men were playing basketball in the street in Englewood last week when a vehicle drive by, someone started shooting, leaving Malcolm Gayles Jr. dead and a man critically wounded.

The men were playing ball at 3:07 p.m. June 6 in the 5800 block of South Shields when a light-colored Chevrolet Impala drove up and someone sitting in the backseat started shooting, according to Chicago Police.

One man, identified Monday as the 26-year-old Gayles, was shot in the torso and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:51 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood.

A 30-year-old man was shot in the chin and left leg, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

No one was in custody as of Monday morning.

The victim’s father, Malcolm Gayles Sr., wrote on Facebook: “…My son is no longer in this world. … My son is gone, taken out by gun violence. He never ever had his head on dumb street shit. No intentions of harming anyone or anything. … He was shot and killed for no reason at all. I know one thing he will not be in the slightest forgotten.”

Funeral services for Malcolm Patrick Matthew Jamal Gayles Jr. will be conducted Saturday, June 17, at Elim Christian Church at 2735 W. 79th St. The wake will be at 10 a.m. and the funeral at 10:30 a.m.

Friends Corey Hill Jr., 16; and Jacques Mack, 15, gunned down in North Lawndale by masked gunman with rifle

Two teenage boys called best friends—16-year-old Corey Hill Jr. and 15-year-old Jacques Mack—were killed in a shooting Wednesday morning in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.

The boys were standing on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of South Lawndale at 9:06 a.m., according to Chicago Police.

A silver vehicle pulled up an a suspect wearing a mask and carrying a rifle got out and fired multiple rounds, police said. The shooter then got back in the vehicle and drove off.

Hill and Mack were shot multiple times and were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Hill, known to friends as Montana Garcia, lived in the Austin neighborhood. the medical examiner’s office spelled his name Jacquez.

Mack lived in East Garfield Park. Witnesses said they may have been visiting relatives in the neighborhood.

No bond for man charged with fatal shooting of 53-year-old Tina Brown in South Chicago

A man has been charged with fatally shooting 53-year-old Tina Brown last month in the South Chicago neighborhood.

Gregory L. Pearson, 49, faces one count of first-degree murder for the death of Brown, according to Chicago Police.

Brown was found with a gunshot wound to the head inside a home in the 8000 block of South Essex Avenue about 12:20 a.m. on May 20, authorities said. The shooting might have stemmed from a domestic issue, police said at the time.

Pearson, of the South Side Burnside neighborhood, was ordered held without bond at the Cook County Jail, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office. He is next scheduled to appear in court June 12.
