Xavier Thornton was shot to death late Tuesday in the Burnside neighborhood on the South Side.
The 23-year-old was getting out of a vehicle in the 9000 block of South Greenwood at 9:03 p.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
That’s when the driver fired shots at him before driving away, according to police.
Thornton, who lived on the same block as the shooting, was struck in the chest and head, and was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, where he died at 10:23 p.m., authorities said. His death was ruled a homicide.

An Iowa man was ordered held without bond Tuesday for allegedly killing Alvin Vincent Randolph, who tried to stop a fight that stemmed from an argument over a dice game on the South Side.
Emmanuel Harvey, who was working at an Oral-B toothbrush factory, was recently arrested in Iowa for the May 14 murder of the 29-year-old Randolph.
Garland Benson, 26, was ordered held without bail in July, also charged in the deadly shooting in the 6400 block of South Damen.
The day before Randolph was killed, Benson accused another person of cheating during a dice game, prompting Harvey to hit the other player with a shovel several times, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Jamie Santini said in court Tuesday. Read more
A body found stuffed in a suitcase in an alley in the Far South Side Roseland neighborhood on Sunday has been identified as 21-year-old Dominique Ferguson.
She was found dead about 2 p.m. in the 300 block of West 115th Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. She lived in the 400 block of West 125th Place.
Media reports said the body was found stuffed in a suitcase by teenagers playing in the area.
It was not yet known how she died, as an autopsy Monday did not rule on cause and manner of death, with results pending further investigation.
Area South detectives are conducting a death investigation pending results of the autopsy, police said.
At least 12 people died from violence during the Christmas holiday week in Chicago, including two men fatally shot on Christmas Day, and a 21-year-old woman whose body was found in a suitcase in a Far South Side alley.
Chicago Police also fatally shot two people while responding to a domestic violence call in the west Side Austin neighborhood, where four of the week’s earlier homicides took place.

Ashlee Eddings of southwest suburban Joliet died several hours after being shot early Sunday in Englewood, the same shooting that claimed the life of Tyree White.
The 29-year-old White and the 28-year-old Eddings were outside near West 59th Street and South Wentworth Avenue when someone walked up and opened fire about 2:15 a.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
White, of the 200 block of East 121st Place, was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene less than 30 minutes later, authorities said.
Eddings, of the 300 block of North Broadway Street in Joliet, was shot in the back and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:05 a.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office.
A man who was shot to death Saturday night in the West Garfield Park neighborhood has been identified as Jacquez Price.
The 28-year-old Price was found about 7:20 p.m. in the 600 block of South Tripp Avenue with gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Price, of the 4500 block of West Congress, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:47 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
An autopsy found he died of multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Jose L. Lopez was fatally shot late Saturday in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
The 37-year-old Lopez was sitting outside with other people about 9:50 p.m. in the 2800 block of West 21st Place, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
That’s when a white SUV pulled up and someone inside flashed gang signs before opening fire, according to police.
Lopez was shot in the chest and mouth, and was taken by a friend to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died less than an hour later, authorities said. He lived on the block where he was killed.
Tyree White was killed and a woman injured in an Englewood neighborhood shooting early Sunday on the South Side.

Eugene Bailey died after being stabbed in the chest on Christmas Eve in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.
The 42-year-old Bailey, who lived in the 1200 block of West 115th Street, was stabbed in the chest around 5:30 p.m. during an altercation in the 300 block of West 111th Place, according to Chicago Police.
He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition. and died there at 7:51 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Kylan D. Collier was shot to death on Christmas morning outside his Austin neighborhood home on the West Side.
The 22-year-old was found unresponsive about 8:30 a.m. on the stairs of the back porch of his home in the 5500 block of West Monroe, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Collier had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Area North detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.
