Prosecutors say Steven Cowan’s dying words helped authorities identify the convicted killer who shot him

After Steven Cowan was shot several times while sitting in a blue truck parked in West Englewood on Friday morning, someone heard him say, “Joe shot me,” according to Cook County prosecutors.

Joe” is Joseph Bey, a previously convicted murderer whose associates had been in a “neighborhood” dispute with friends of Cowan, Assistant State’s Attorney Jamie Santini said.

Cowan, 29, was alone in the driver’s seat of the vehicle in the 6400 block of South Damen at 11:18 a.m. Friday when Bey ran from a nearby gangway and started firing into the truck, Santini said.

During the shooting, Bey’s gun jammed, but he managed to unjam it and shoot at Cowan some more, Santini said.

Autopsy finds 74-year-old Arthur Malone died of injuries suffered in 1948 assault

Sometime in the summer of 1948, young Arthur Malone was assaulted and sustained injuries that eventually killed him—more than 60 years later.

The 74-year-old South Side man died at 10:59 a.m. Aug. 1 at his home in the 7200 block of South Indiana Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Malone was assaulted in 1948, according to the medical examiner’s office, and that attack ultimately led to his death..

An autopsy did not immediately rule on cause and manner of death, but has since found Malone died of complications from blunt force injuries to the head suffered in that assault, according to the medical examiner’s office.

His death has been ruled a homicide.

Details of the 1948 assault, including the date and location, were not available.

WEEK IN REVIEW: At least 27 killed, including twin 17-year-old boys and 14-year-old honor student

At least 27 people died from violence in Chicago last week, including 17 in the deadliest weekend of the year in Chicago. The death toll included a 14-year-old honor student, and twin 17-year-old boys.

At least 17 people, including four teenagers, were killed and 41 people were wounded in shootings across the city between Friday evening and Monday morning, the highest weekend death toll in a year that had seen more than 640 homicides through Halloween.

The twin brothers were killed in a drive-by shooting early Sunday in Old Town. Edwin Bryant and Edward Bryant were standing outside about 3:15 a.m. in the 1300 block of North Hudson when a dark-colored vehicle drove by and someone inside opened fire, according to authorities.

Edwin was shot in the chest and back, and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:45 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and Chicago Police. Edward suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and head, and was also taken to Northwestern, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

  • The 14-year-old boy was fatally shot early Saturday in the South Austin neighborhood. At 1:23 a.m., DeMarco Webster Jr. was on the street helping his father load items into a car in the 500 block of South Central when someone in a dark-colored car shot him in the torso, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Webster was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died abut two hours later, authorities said. Demarco was an 8th-grade honor student at Jensen Scholastic Academy.

Mark Higgins Jr. found with fatal gunshot wounds in his Englewood apartment

Mark Higgins Jr., a father of five, was shot to death early Monday in an Englewood neighborhood apartment on the South Side.

Higgins, 28, was found about 4 a.m. with gunshot wounds to the head and chest on the kitchen floor of a second-floor apartment in the 1100 block of West Garfield, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:09 a.m., according to authorities. He lived on the same block as the shooting.

Area South detectives are conducting a homicide investigation, but no one was in custody as of Wednesday.

A YouCaring page has been set up to help the family—he had three sons and two daughters, all 12 or younger—and to help pay funeral expenses.

Gerald Gordon killed, second man wounded when shots ring out on street in Roseland

Officers heard loud reports at 12:37 a.m. and found the victims on the street with gunshot wounds in the 11100 block of South Michigan, according to Chicago Police.

Gordon, 19, was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene at 1 a.m., police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. His home address was not known.

The other man, 22, was shot in the head, and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Father of three Kevin Wilson dies a month after being shot while walking to visit a friend in Chatham

A father of three who was expecting his fourth child, Kevin Wilson died Monday, more than a month after he was shot while walking to visit a friend in the South Side Chatham neighborhood.

The 28-year-old Wilson was walking down the street at 12:53 a.m. Sept. 27 in the 300 block of East 81st Street across the street from Crerar Memorial Presbyterian Church. That’s when two male suspects came up behind him and opened fire, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Wilson, of the 1400 block of East 79th Street, was hit twice in the back and once in the abdomen. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 1:01 p.m. Monday, authorities said.

An autopsy Tuesday found he died of complications from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Wilson, known as “Jay,” had three sons, and was expecting his fourth child, a girl, family members said on a GoFundMe page set up to help with funeral expenses.

Parents investigated by DCFS after 3-year-old Tayveon Thomas of West Pullman dies from child abuse

The death of 3-year-old Tayveon J. Thomas on Monday in the West Pullman neighborhood has been ruled a homicide by child abuse.

Police were called at 8:23 a.m. Monday to an apartment in the 12200 block of South Green, where officers found the boy with “visible injuries,” according to News Affairs Officer Michelle Tannehill.

Tayveon was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:15 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy Tuesday found he died of multiple injuries from child abuse, and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Area South detectives are investigating, but no one was in custody as of Tuesday afternoon.

The boy’s parents are being investigated for allegations of abuse, DCFS spokeswoman Veronica Resa said. The agency has not had prior contact with the family, and it wasn’t clear if there were other children in the household, Resa said.

Dorise Anderson is third death from Back of the Yards fire to be ruled homicide, along with Tommie and Danny Darling

Three deaths in an August arson fire at a home in the South Side Back of the Yards neighborhood have now been ruled homicides after final autopsy results were announced for Dorise Anderson.

Two people were found dead after the fire in the 5400 block of South Laflin was extinguished about 2 a.m. Aug. 27, Chicago Fire Department officials said at the time. They were identified as 61-year-old Tommie Darling and the 55-year-old Anderson, who both lived in the home.

Autopsy results for Anderson were initially pending, but later found she died from thermal injuries and inhalation of products due to a house fire, the Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed Saturday. Her death was ruled a homicide.

A previous autopsy found the same causes of death for Tommie Darling, and his death was also ruled a homicide.

Brian Fields, shot in March on Facebook Live, shot to death this time, along with Chiquita Ford, in gas station lot

Brian Fields was nearly killed in March when he was shot while posting a video on Facebook Live. On Friday he wasn’t so lucky, as he and Chiquita Ford were killed when someone opened fire on the car they were sitting in at a Back of the Yards gas station.

Fields, 30, was inside the vehicle about 10:20 p.m. at a station in the 1900 block of West Garfield when a gunman walked up and shot him in the chest, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Ford, also 30, was in the vehicle with him, and was shot in the side. They were both pronounced dead at the scene at 11:02 p.m. No one was in custody, and police continue to investigate.

A police source confirmed Fields was also shot earlier this year, on March 31 in West Englewood.

Gilbert Leroy Wainwright III of Downers Grove found shot to death on Humboldt Park sidewalk

West suburban resident Gilbert Leroy Wainwright III was fatally shot early Sunday in the Humboldt Park neighborhood while returning from a concert.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 12:45 a.m. found the 31-year-old Wainwright lying on the sidewalk in the 3400 block of West Hirsch, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Wainwright had suffered a gunshot wound to the face and was taken to Norwegian American Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:54 a.m., authorities said.

He lived in the 3900 block of Williams Street in Downers Grove.

Friends posted on Facebook that Wainwright was a “juggalo”—the term used for devoted fans of the musical group Insane Clown Posse and similar groups who perform music known as “horrorcore” or “underground rap.”

He was returning from a concert by the group Twiztid when he was killed.
